68Ga-PSMA-617 is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical used in positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging to detect prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-expressing tumors, most notably in prostate cancer. It consists of the ligand PSMA-617 labeled with the radioisotope gallium-68, which emits positrons for PET imaging. The compound binds specifically to PSMA, a transmembrane protein highly expressed on prostate cancer cells and some other tumor types. After intravenous administration, 68Ga-PSMA-617 accumulates in PSMA-expressing tissues, allowing for sensitive and specific visualization of primary and metastatic lesions using PET/CT scans. This agent is primarily used for staging, restaging, and evaluating response to therapy in patients with prostate cancer[2][7][9].
