Drug intelligence / Profile preview
68Ga-triacetylfusarinine C (68Ga-TAFC) is an investigational radiopharmaceutical diagnostic PET imaging tracer designed for the detection of invasive aspergillosis, a severe fungal infection caused by *Aspergillus fumigatus*. The tracer consists of the natural fungal siderophore triacetylfusarinine C (TAFC) labeled with the positron-emitting radionuclide gallium-68 (68Ga). TAFC is an iron chelator secreted by *A. fumigatus* to scavenge iron from the host. Once chelated with iron (or its chemical mimic, gallium-68), the complex is actively internalized by the fungus via the highly upregulated major facilitator-type transporter MirB. This pathogen-specific uptake mechanism allows for highly selective PET/CT imaging of active fungal infections, with rapid renal clearance and minimal background uptake in sterile inflammation or bacterial abscesses. It is being evaluated in clinical trials, such as the 'SPECIFIC' pilot study, for the non-invasive diagnosis of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis.
