**7-methylxanthine** is a methylated derivative of xanthine and an active metabolite of caffeine and theobromine. It acts as a non-selective antagonist of adenosine receptors (including A1, A2A, and A2B subtypes), thereby modulating neurotransmission and smooth muscle tone. It is found occasionally in human urine as a result of purine metabolism. Clinically, it has been investigated for its potential to slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children by retarding axial elongation of the eye. Studies suggest that systemic treatment with 7-methylxanthine may be safe and effective for this purpose[3][5][8]. The compound exhibits low toxicity and no carcinogenic effects[8].
