Drug intelligence / Profile preview
7.2% NaCl (7.2% sodium chloride) is an investigational hypertonic saline solution that was evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial sponsored by The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). Administered intravenously, this small-molecule inorganic salt solution acts by expanding circulatory volume osmotically and modulating vascular tone. It was investigated for the treatment and prevention of pulmonary hypertensive crisis in pediatric patients undergoing cardiac catheterization, with the hypothesis that hypertonic saline selectively reduces pulmonary vascular resistance relative to systemic vascular resistance. Development for this indication was terminated.
