84-1 is a monoclonal antibody developed at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center that specifically targets cell surface vimentin (CSV). While vimentin is typically an intracellular intermediate filament protein, it is specifically expressed on the surface of cells undergoing epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), cancer stem cells, and circulating tumor cells (CTCs). The 84-1 antibody is utilized as a research tool to identify and isolate these aggressive, metastatic cell populations and is being investigated as a potential therapeutic agent to target and eliminate metastatic carcinoma and cancer stem cells in various malignancies, including liver cancer and glioblastoma.
