Drug intelligence / Profile preview
8Spheres microsphere is a medical device used as an embolic agent in interventional radiology. It consists of a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) skeleton and is designed to occlude blood vessels, thereby cutting off the blood supply to target areas such as hypervascular tumors, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), and uterine fibroids. By starving these tissues of nutrients and oxygen, the microspheres cause them to shrink or become necrotic. It is FDA-cleared and has been studied for applications including uterine artery embolization (UAE) for leiomyomas, partial splenic embolization (PSE) for hypersplenism, and bronchial artery embolization for advanced lung squamous cell carcinoma.
