This molecule acts as an inhibitor of neuraminidases (sialidases), enzymes that catalyze the removal of terminal sialic acids from glycoproteins and glycolipids on cell surfaces. By mimicking the transition state of the enzymatic reaction, it competitively inhibits both viral and mammalian neuraminidases[1][4][7]. This property makes it valuable for studying viral infection mechanisms (such as influenza) and cellular processes involving sialic acids. The compound has not been approved for clinical use or marketed under any brand name[1].
