Drug intelligence / Profile preview
9-Phenanthrol is a selective small molecule inhibitor of the transient receptor potential melastatin 4 (TRPM4) channel, a calcium-activated non-selective cation channel. By blocking TRPM4-mediated monovalent cation influx, 9-phenanthrol prevents cell membrane depolarization and regulates intracellular calcium signaling. It is widely used as a pharmacological tool in laboratory research to study the physiological and pathological roles of TRPM4 in various systems, including cardiac rhythm, vascular smooth muscle tone, cerebral edema, and ischemic tissue injury. At higher concentrations, it has also been shown to inhibit other channels such as TMEM16A and activate KCa3.1.
