The 9-valent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is a recombinant vaccine composed of purified virus-like particles (VLPs) of the major capsid (L1) protein of HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58. Developed to provide broader protection than bivalent or quadrivalent versions, it targets the high-risk types responsible for the majority of cervical cancers and the low-risk types causing genital warts. The vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies that prevent the virus from entering host cells. In a Phase 4 clinical trial led by the Zhejiang Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, this vaccine is being evaluated as part of a sequential immunization schedule following a bivalent HPV vaccine in girls aged 9-14 years to optimize protection and vaccine coverage in China.
