Overview

This combination refers to the co-administration of a 9-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide-protein conjugate vaccine (PCV9) and a Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccine, specifically in the context of clinical trials conducted by the Comprehensive International Program of Research on AIDS (CIPRA) in South Africa. The PCV9 component, developed by Wyeth (now Pfizer), targets nine serotypes of *Streptococcus pneumoniae* (1, 4, 5, 6B, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F, and 23F) by conjugating their capsular polysaccharides to the CRM197 carrier protein. The Hib component targets the polyribosylribitol phosphate (PRP) capsule of *Haemophilus influenzae* type b. These conjugate vaccines convert T-cell independent antigens into T-cell dependent ones, inducing high-affinity antibodies and immunological memory in infants. The CIPRA SA trials were instrumental in evaluating the safety and efficacy of these vaccines in both HIV-infected and uninfected children in high-burden settings.
