Overview

99mTc-annexin V-128 is an investigational radiopharmaceutical imaging agent developed for the non-invasive detection of apoptosis (programmed cell death) in vivo. It consists of a recombinant variant of human annexin V, known as annexin V-128, which has been engineered for optimal labeling with the radioisotope technetium-99m (99mTc). Annexin V has a high natural affinity for phosphatidylserine, a phospholipid that is normally sequestered on the inner leaflet of the cell membrane but is externalized during the early stages of apoptosis. By binding to these exposed phosphatidylserine residues, 99mTc-annexin V-128 serves as a molecular probe that can be visualized using Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) imaging. Columbia University is evaluating this agent in Phase 2 clinical trials to detect perioperative lung injury and destructive processes in patients undergoing major surgery, such as the Whipple procedure, particularly in those with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
