99mTc-BBN is a radiopharmaceutical composed of the gamma-emitting radionuclide technetium-99m (99mTc) conjugated to a bombesin (BBN) peptide derivative. It specifically targets the gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRPR), which is highly expressed in several human tumors, including prostate, breast, and gastrointestinal cancers. While primarily utilized as a diagnostic imaging agent for Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), 99mTc-BBN is also studied in the context of targeted radionuclide therapy due to the emission of Auger electrons by 99mTc. In comparative studies, it serves as a reference compound for evaluating the efficacy of multi-targeted radioconjugates designed to enhance intracellular irradiation of sensitive organelles like the nucleus or mitochondria.
