99mTc-CS is an investigational diagnostic radiopharmaceutical consisting of chondroitin sulfate (CS) radiolabeled with the gamma-emitting isotope technetium-99m (99mTc). Developed by researchers at the Medical University of Vienna, it is designed for the non-invasive imaging of articular cartilage using scintigraphy or SPECT. The tracer exhibits chondrotropism, accumulating in the proteoglycan-rich extracellular matrix and chondrocytes of articular cartilage, either through adsorption or as a substrate for proteoglycan synthesis. It is primarily being evaluated for the detection and quantification of cartilage degeneration in patients with osteoarthritis, providing a functional imaging alternative or complement to MRI.
