99mTc-NTP 15-5 is a technetium-99m labeled radiopharmaceutical developed as a diagnostic imaging agent for cartilage. It is a quaternary ammonium-polyglutamate derivative that specifically targets proteoglycans, particularly glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), within the extracellular matrix of cartilage. By binding to the negatively charged GAGs, the tracer enables the non-invasive assessment of cartilage integrity and proteoglycan content using Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) imaging. This is primarily intended for the early detection and monitoring of osteoarthritis, a condition characterized by the progressive loss of proteoglycans. The tracer was developed by the Centre Jean Perrin and has been evaluated in Phase I clinical trials for patients with knee osteoarthritis and breast cancer.
