99mTc-resveratrol is a radiopharmaceutical agent consisting of resveratrol (a polyphenolic stilbene derivative) radiolabeled with technetium-99m (99mTc). It was developed as a potential molecular imaging agent for cancer detection, particularly for estrogen receptor (ER) positive mammary cancers. The compound works through resveratrol's agonist/antagonistic action with estrogen receptors, which are overexpressed in breast cancer cells. The radiopharmaceutical shows preferential uptake in cancerous mammary tissue compared to normal mammary tissue, making it suitable for SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) imaging. The compound is eliminated through both renal and hepatobiliary routes, with primary excretion via kidneys. Key characteristics include radiochemical purity >85%, stability up to 2 hours, high protein binding (70-80%), and a two-compartment pharmacokinetic model. However, challenges include accumulation in reticuloendothelial organs (liver and spleen), low water solubility, and high protein binding which decrease its availability at tumor sites.
