Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**9Z,11E-conjugated linoleic acid** (c9,t11-CLA) is a specific isomer of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a naturally occurring fatty acid primarily found in meat and dairy from ruminant animals[2][3][4][5]. CLA consists of different isomers, but the 9Z,11E/cis-9, trans-11 isomer is the most abundant and biologically active form in food sources. 9Z,11E-CLA has potential mechanisms of action that include modulation of lipid metabolism, reduction of body fat, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, anti-cancer properties, and cardiovascular benefits[2][4][5]. Its biological effects are thought to be mediated by interactions with nuclear receptors such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), modulating gene expression involved in fat metabolism, inflammation, cell proliferation, and apoptosis[4]. Some studies suggest this isomer can increase adiponectin and endothelial nitric oxide synthase activity, inhibit matrix metalloproteinases involved in tumor invasion, and exert neuroprotective effects[4]. 9Z,11E-CLA is marketed as a dietary supplement for weight loss, metabolic health, and cancer prevention, but human evidence is inconclusive and safety concerns exist regarding insulin resistance and lipid profiles[1][3][5]. There are no pharmaceutical formulations of pure 9Z,11E-CLA; it is typically present as part of multi-isomer CLA dietary supplements.
