Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Açai extract is a botanical extract derived from the fruit of the açai palm (*Euterpe oleracea*), native to the Amazon region. It is rich in bioactive phytochemicals, particularly polyphenols and anthocyanins (such as cyanidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3-rutinoside), which confer potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The extract acts primarily by modulating the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway, inhibiting NF-kB activation, and activating the Nrf2 antioxidant response. Açai extract has been investigated in clinical and preclinical studies for various conditions, including COVID-19 (where it was evaluated in a Phase 2 trial to mitigate hyperinflammation), diabetic nephropathy, endometriosis, and cardiovascular diseases.
