Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The A, C, Y, W135 meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine is a tetravalent biologic designed to prevent invasive disease caused by *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroups A, C, Y, and W135. It consists of purified capsular polysaccharides from each of the four target serogroups. The vaccine functions by inducing the production of serogroup-specific bactericidal antibodies, which provide immunity against the bacteria. This specific entry refers to research conducted by Epicentre (the research arm of Médecins Sans Frontières) in Uganda, which evaluated the immunogenicity of fractional doses (1/5 and 1/10 of the standard dose) to extend vaccine supplies during outbreaks in the African Meningitis Belt. The standard full dose typically contains 50 μg of each polysaccharide component.
