Overview

A-to-O Lung transplant conversion is an ex vivo organ-treatment program originating from research at the University of British Columbia and University Health Network and being developed by Avivo. It uses the enzyme pair FpGalNAc deacetylase and FpGalactosaminidase during ex vivo lung perfusion to remove blood group A antigen from type A donor-lung vascular and epithelial surfaces, converting the tissue toward a type O-like compatibility state. In preclinical human donor-lung studies, the enzyme-containing perfusate removed more than 97% of endothelial A antigen within four hours and reduced anti-A antibody binding, complement deposition, and simulated antibody-mediated injury.
