Avivo Biomedical is developing an enzyme-based blood type conversion system designed to convert Type A packed red blood cells (RBCs) into universal Type O RBCs. The system utilizes two proprietary enzymes, FpGalNAc deacetylase and FpGalactosaminidase, derived from the gut bacterium *Flavonifractor plautii*. These enzymes work synergistically to remove the A-antigen determinants (N-acetylgalactosamine) from the surface of red blood cells. This ex vivo treatment aims to eliminate ABO blood group incompatibility barriers, potentially increasing the supply of universal donor blood and reducing the risk of hemolytic transfusion reactions. The technology is currently in preclinical development for packed RBC transfusions.
