Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Avivo Biomedical (formerly ABOzymes Biomedical) is developing an enzymatic system designed to convert Type A blood into Type O, the universal donor type. The technology utilizes proprietary enzymes to specifically remove or modify A-specific sugar residues (N-acetylgalactosamine) from the surface of red blood cells and other blood components. This ex vivo treatment aims to eliminate blood type incompatibility barriers in transfusions, potentially increasing the supply of universally compatible blood and reducing the risk of hemolytic transfusion reactions. The system is currently in the preclinical stage of development.
