Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A009 is a purified, polyphenol-rich extract derived from olive mill wastewater (OMWW), a byproduct generated during extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) processing. It is highly enriched in soluble polyphenols, with hydroxytyrosol being the most abundant component, alongside verbascoside and oleuropein. Developed through a collaboration involving the agricultural producer Azienda Agricola-Fattoria La Vialla and academic institutions such as IRCCS MultiMedica and the University of Insubria, A009 is being investigated for its chemopreventive, anti-angiogenic, and cardioprotective properties. In preclinical models, A009 has demonstrated the ability to inhibit the proliferation, migration, and invasion of breast, colon, lung, and prostate cancer cells. Furthermore, in cardio-oncology studies, A009 has shown significant potential to mitigate chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity (such as that caused by doxorubicin, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil) without compromising the anti-tumor efficacy of the chemotherapeutic agents.
