Overview

A1561TS is a 20-mer phosphorothioate antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) developed by Shiseido for the potential treatment of baldness (androgenetic alopecia). It specifically targets and inhibits the expression of Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor 1 (FGFR1). In the hair follicle cycle, Fibroblast Growth Factor 5 (FGF-5) acts as a crucial signal to transition follicles from the anagen (growth) phase to the catagen (regression) phase. By suppressing the expression of FGFR1, the receptor required for FGF-5 signaling, A1561TS aims to block this inhibitory pathway, thereby promoting continued hair follicle activity and extending the hair growth cycle. Preclinical studies using mouse hair follicle organ cultures demonstrated that A1561TS could stimulate cellular activity, suggesting its potential as a hair growth promoter.
