Overview

AAV-AQP1 is a gene therapy being developed for the treatment of xerostomia (dry mouth). It uses adeno-associated virus (AAV) to deliver the human aquaporin-1 (AQP1) gene to salivary glands that have been damaged by radiation therapy or affected by autoimmune diseases such as Sjögren's syndrome. The therapy is designed to increase water conduction in damaged salivary glands by introducing a water conducting channel, thereby restoring fluid secretion and alleviating symptoms of dry mouth. The mechanism involves transcellular movement of fluid via AQP1 proteins, which appear to be decreased in patients with xerostomia.
