Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AAV-BMP7 is an experimental, preclinical gene therapy designed to deliver the bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) gene using an adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector. Developed by researchers at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and CIBERDEM, the therapy primarily targets metabolic disorders such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and insulin resistance. In preclinical models, a single intravenous or local administration of AAV-BMP7 (specifically using AAV8, AAV6, or AAV5 serotypes) leads to sustained, long-term expression and secretion of BMP7 by transduced cells. This increase in circulating BMP7 levels promotes the browning of white adipose tissue, activates brown adipose tissue, increases energy expenditure, and reverses hepatic steatosis and tissue inflammation, ultimately normalizing body weight and restoring insulin sensitivity.
