AAV.7m8.CaMeRaOpsin Gtx Optogenetics is an investigational intravitreal gene therapy being developed for the treatment of geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Developed by Adverum Biotechnologies (which agreed to be acquired by Eli Lilly in late 2025), the therapy utilizes Adverum's proprietary AAV.7m8 vector capsid to deliver a transgene encoding CaMeRaOpsin, an engineered melanopsin mutant. This optogenetic approach is designed to restore vision in patients with advanced photoreceptor loss by expressing the light-sensitive melanopsin mutant in surviving inner retinal cells, effectively turning them into functional photoreceptors. The program is currently in preclinical development.
