Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AAV2-GEC-IdeS is an investigational gene therapy designed to treat antibody-mediated glomerulonephritis. It consists of an engineered adeno-associated virus serotype 2 (AAV2) capsid, designated AAV2-GEC, which exhibits high tropism for glomerular endothelial cells (GECs). The vector delivers a transgene encoding the bacterial cysteine proteinase IdeS (immunoglobulin G-degrading enzyme of Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as imlifidase). Upon transduction, GECs express and secrete IdeS, which cleaves and clears pathogenic IgG antibodies from the circulation and the glomerular basement membrane, thereby preventing or ameliorating kidney damage. The therapy was developed by researchers at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf.
