Overview

AAV8-hCocH is a gene therapy being developed for cocaine use disorder. It's an adeno-associated viral vector (AAV8) that encodes a modified plasma enzyme called human cocaine hydrolase (hCocH). This enzyme metabolizes cocaine into harmless by-products, potentially reducing the pleasurable effects of cocaine and helping individuals maintain abstinence. The therapy is administered intravenously, with the vector primarily targeting the liver. By breaking down cocaine in the body, it may reduce the pleasurable effects of the drug, decrease craving, and help prevent relapse in individuals seeking to abstain from cocaine use.
