Overview
AAV9-MRTF-A is an adeno-associated virus serotype 9 (AAV9) gene therapy encoding myocardin-related transcription factor A (MRTF-A). Originally developed by researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) under the GeneVaPAD project, the therapy was licensed in Europe to South Korean biotech startup MarkHerz in April 2025. AAV9-MRTF-A is designed to promote functional blood vessel regeneration and maturation by overexpressing MRTF-A, which stimulates microvessel sprouting and stabilization through the upregulation of downstream targets like CCN1 and CCN2. It is currently in preclinical development for the treatment of peripheral artery disease (PAD), chronic hindlimb ischemia, and ischemic heart disease.
