Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AB-2-81 is a preclinical reserpine derivative developed by the University of Central Florida and the University of Florida. It was discovered using a "Complexity to Diversity" ring distortion approach on the indole alkaloid reserpine to generate novel antiplasmodial compounds. AB-2-81 exhibits potent antiplasmodial activity against *Plasmodium falciparum* (EC50 of 131 ± 21 nM) with high selectivity (selectivity index >191). It inhibits the early asexual blood stages (ring and trophozoite) of the parasite and shows promising liver-stage activity, making it a potential dual-stage antimalarial candidate.
