Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AB-free kava is a specialized formulation of the traditional herbal supplement derived from the roots of Piper methysticum, commonly known as kava. This preparation is specifically depleted of flavokavains A and B, compounds implicated in rare cases of hepatotoxicity associated with some commercial or non-traditional extracts. Kava has a long history of use among South Pacific Islanders for its calming, anxiolytic, and sleep-promoting effects. AB-free kava is being investigated as a novel intervention to facilitate tobacco cessation by holistically addressing stress and insomnia during nicotine withdrawal[1][2][6]. Preclinical studies suggest it may reduce tobacco-induced lung cancer risk, mitigate dependence, and improve resilience against tobacco smoke-related health damage through modulation of biological pathways such as protein kinase A (PKA) signaling[2][6]. It is marketed in the US as a dietary supplement for stress relief and sleep enhancement.
