Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AB-KOLICARE is a probiotic oral drop formulation developed by the Spanish biotechnology company AB-Biotics to treat functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) in infants, specifically infant colic and functional constipation. It is a combination product containing two patented live bacterial strains: *Bifidobacterium longum* KABP042 (CECT 7894) and *Pediococcus pentosaceus* KABP041 (CECT 8330). The proposed mechanism of action involves modulating the gut microbiota, adhering to and protecting the intestinal epithelium by regulating tight junction proteins, and inhibiting pathogenic bacteria through the production of organic acids and antimicrobials. [7] Clinical trials have shown that AB-KOLICARE can reduce crying and fussing time in infants with colic. [1, 3] A comparative study indicated its superiority over another commonly used probiotic, *Limosilactobacillus reuteri* DSM17938. [5] The product is marketed for use in babies from birth (0+ months). [13]
