Overview

AB402 is an oral small molecule plasma kallikrein inhibitor developed for the treatment of vision-threatening eye complications of diabetes, specifically diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME). Plasma kallikrein is a key mediator of vascular leakage in these conditions. By inhibiting plasma kallikrein activity, AB402 aims to reduce retinal vascular permeability and inflammation. The drug has also been investigated for hereditary angioedema (HAE), another condition characterized by increased vascular leakage. Unlike current standard-of-care anti-VEGF therapies that require intravitreal injections, AB402 offers the potential for a non-invasive oral alternative[1][3][5].
