Overview

Abacavir, lamivudine, and atazanavir are antiretroviral drugs used in combination to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Abacavir and lamivudine are nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that inhibit the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme, preventing viral replication[1][5][8]. Atazanavir is an azapeptide HIV-1 protease inhibitor that binds to the active site of the HIV protease enzyme, blocking cleavage of viral polyproteins and resulting in immature, non-infectious viral particles[6]. This triple-drug regimen is used as part of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for managing HIV infection. The combination does not cure HIV but helps suppress viral load and delay progression to AIDS.
