Overview

Abacavir + lamivudine + efavirenz is a combination antiretroviral therapy used in the treatment of HIV infection. Abacavir and lamivudine are both nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), which inhibit the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme by causing DNA chain termination after incorporation into viral DNA, thereby preventing viral replication[5][6]. Efavirenz is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) that binds directly to reverse transcriptase and blocks RNA- and DNA-dependent DNA polymerase activities, disrupting the enzyme's catalytic site[2]. This triple-drug regimen reduces HIV viral load, increases CD4+ cell counts, and delays progression to AIDS but does not cure HIV infection. The combination may be used as part of first-line or alternative regimens for adults with HIV; it is especially relevant in resource-limited settings due to its efficacy and ease of use[4].
