This combination therapy, evaluated in the PHI-IMD clinical trial (NCT00114153) led by Juan A. Arnaiz, is an experimental regimen for primary HIV-1 infection. It consists of a standard Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) backbone—comprising Trizivir (abacavir, lamivudine, and zidovudine) and Kaletra (lopinavir and ritonavir)—augmented with an immune-based therapy. The immunotherapy components include cyclosporine A, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), pegylated-interferon-alpha, and low-dose interleukin-2 (IL-2). The regimen is designed to suppress viral replication while simultaneously stimulating a robust, HIV-specific immune response, with the ultimate goal of achieving sustained viral control in the absence of ongoing antiretroviral treatment.
