Overview

Abafungin is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent of the arylguanidine class developed for topical treatment of fungal infections such as dermatomycoses and onychomycosis. It acts through a dual mechanism: inhibiting sterol 24-C-methyltransferase to disrupt ergosterol biosynthesis in the fungal cell membrane and directly damaging the membrane itself. This results in both fungicidal and fungistatic effects against dermatophytes, yeasts (including Candida species), and moulds. Abafungin also exhibits some antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria and sporicidal properties. The drug was originally synthesized at Bayer AG and later developed by York Pharma under the brand name Abasol as a topical cream[1][2][4][5][6].
