Overview

Abarelix is a synthetic decapeptide and a potent gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist. It acts by directly and competitively blocking GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland, leading to rapid suppression of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion. This results in decreased testosterone production by the testes without an initial surge in testosterone levels, which distinguishes it from GnRH agonists. Abarelix was developed for the palliative treatment of advanced prostate cancer, particularly in patients who are not candidates for LHRH agonist therapy or surgical castration and have symptomatic metastatic disease or are at risk for complications such as neurologic compromise or urinary obstruction[1][2][3][5][6].
