Overview

ABCB5 monoclonal antibody is a therapeutic biologic designed to target the ATP-binding cassette member B5 (ABCB5) protein, which is a marker for malignant melanoma-initiating cells (MMICs). ABCB5 functions as a drug efflux transporter and plays a critical role in tumor growth, metastasis, and chemoresistance. By binding to ABCB5, the antibody inhibits the invasive capacity and proliferation of metastatic tumor cells, effectively suppressing the progression of disseminated disease. Research indicates that its anti-metastatic activity can occur through direct functional inhibition of the target, independent of antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC). The antibody has been primarily developed through research at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital, with commercial development efforts led by RHEACELL.
