Overview

Abciximab + unfractionated heparin is a combination therapy used primarily as an adjunct in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and in the management of acute coronary syndromes. Abciximab is a monoclonal antibody fragment that acts as a glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor antagonist, inhibiting platelet aggregation by blocking fibrinogen binding to platelets. Unfractionated heparin is an anticoagulant that potentiates antithrombin III, thereby inhibiting thrombin and factor Xa activity, reducing blood clot formation. The combination aims to provide both potent antiplatelet and anticoagulant effects to reduce thrombotic complications during PCI or in acute coronary syndromes[2][7]. Clinical trials have shown this regimen does not significantly reduce ischemic events compared with alternatives like bivalirudin but increases bleeding risk[2][4][5].
