Overview

Abdala (CIGB-66) is a recombinant protein subunit vaccine developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) in Cuba and produced under the state-run corporation BioCubaFarma. The vaccine is designed to prevent COVID-19 by targeting the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Specifically, it contains residues 331-530 of the spike protein from the Wuhan-Hu-1 strain, expressed as a monomeric subunit in the yeast *Pichia pastoris*. Formulated with aluminum hydroxide as an adjuvant, the vaccine is typically administered in a three-dose regimen at 0, 14, and 28 days. It works by inducing neutralizing antibodies that interfere with the virus's ability to enter host cells. Abdala has received emergency use authorization and full approval in Cuba and several other countries.
