Abenacianine is a novel, investigational, injectable tumor-targeted fluorescent imaging agent developed to assist surgeons in visualizing tumors during surgery for lung cancer. Its primary use is as an adjunct to intraoperative visualization of primary lung cancer, pulmonary lesions, cancer-containing lymph nodes, and positive surgical margins in patients undergoing surgery for known or suspected lung cancer. Abenacianine works by targeting tumor tissue and emitting fluorescence under specific lighting conditions, enabling real-time identification of malignant tissue that may be difficult to detect with standard methods. The drug has demonstrated safety and efficacy in phase 2 clinical trials (NCT05400226), where it improved the detection of clinically significant events such as localization of pulmonary nodules and identification of positive margins. Developed by Vergent Bioscience, abenacianine has received FDA Fast Track designation due to its potential to address unmet needs in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted lung cancer surgeries[1][2][4][5][6][7].
