Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is an intranasal COVID-19 vaccine candidate in preclinical development by Abera Bioscience, a Swedish biotechnology company. The vaccine is based on Abera's proprietary BERA platform technology, which uses bacterial outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) decorated with coronavirus antigens through a modular plug-and-play mechanism. The OMVs are designed to display SARS-CoV-2 antigens to elicit both mucosal and systemic immune responses against the virus. The vaccine is administered via the intranasal/mucosal route as a nasal spray, which aims to provide protection at the point of viral entry in the respiratory tract. Research conducted in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Vrije Universiteit demonstrated that an OMV-based SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidate using Abera's platform induced protective immune responses in a golden hamster infection model. However, Abera has indicated this specific COVID-19 candidate is not expected to proceed through full clinical development, as other COVID-19 vaccines have already advanced further or received market approval. The program primarily serves to demonstrate the platform's versatility for rapid vaccine development against viral diseases and pandemic preparedness.
