Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Abilify Maintena is a long-acting injectable (LAI) formulation of aripiprazole, an atypical antipsychotic developed by Otsuka Pharmaceutical in collaboration with Lundbeck. It is designed as a sterile lyophilized powder that, when reconstituted, forms a suspension for intramuscular injection, typically administered once monthly (every 4 weeks). Aripiprazole's unique pharmacological profile involves partial agonism at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, combined with antagonism at serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. This "dopamine-serotonin system stabilizer" effect helps manage both positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia while minimizing extrapyramidal side effects. Abilify Maintena is indicated for the maintenance treatment of schizophrenia in adults and as maintenance monotherapy for bipolar I disorder. The depot formulation provides sustained therapeutic plasma concentrations over approximately 30 days, significantly improving treatment adherence compared to daily oral medications.
