Overview
Abipros is a branded generic version of abiraterone acetate, an orally administered small molecule inhibitor of the enzyme CYP17A1 (17α-hydroxylase/C17,20-lyase). Developed and manufactured by Pioneer Pharma in Iraq, it is indicated for the treatment of prostate cancer, specifically metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) and metastatic high-risk castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC). By inhibiting the CYP17A1 enzyme complex, which is essential for androgen biosynthesis in the testes, adrenal glands, and prostatic tumor tissues, Abipros effectively reduces serum testosterone to undetectable levels. It is typically administered in combination with a corticosteroid, such as prednisone or prednisolone, to mitigate the side effects of mineralocorticoid excess resulting from compensatory adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) elevation.
