Abiral

Abiral is a generic formulation of abiraterone acetate, an oral androgen biosynthesis inhibitor developed by Genericon Pharma. It is approved for the treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) and metastatic high-risk castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC), typically administered in combination with a corticosteroid such as prednisone or prednisolone. Abiraterone acetate is a prodrug that is rapidly converted in vivo to its active metabolite, abiraterone. Abiraterone selectively and irreversibly inhibits the cytochrome P450 17A1 (CYP17A1) enzyme, which possesses both 17α-hydroxylase and 17,20-lyase activities. This enzyme is critical for androgen biosynthesis in the testes, adrenal glands, and prostate tumor tissues. By blocking CYP17A1, Abiral suppresses the production of testosterone and other androgens that drive prostate cancer progression, thereby slowing tumor growth and extending patient survival.
