Overview

AbiraSYM is an oral hormonal therapy developed by Symbion Life Science for the treatment of prostate cancer, specifically metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). It contains abiraterone acetate, a small molecule inhibitor of the enzyme Cytochrome P450 17A1 (CYP17A1), also known as 17α-hydroxylase/C17,20-lyase. This enzyme is a critical catalyst in the biosynthetic pathway of androgens, occurring in the testes, adrenal glands, and prostate tumor tissues. By inhibiting CYP17A1, AbiraSYM effectively suppresses the production of testosterone and other androgens that drive the progression of prostate cancer cells. It is typically administered in combination with a corticosteroid, such as prednisone or prednisolone, to mitigate the effects of mineralocorticoid excess resulting from CYP17 inhibition.
