Overview

AbobotulinumtoxinA is a purified neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is a subtype of botulinum toxin type A and acts as a neuromuscular blocker. The drug works by inhibiting acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, resulting in temporary muscle paralysis or relaxation. AbobotulinumtoxinA is primarily used to treat cervical dystonia (spasmodic torticollis), spasticity of upper and lower limbs in adults and children aged 2 years and older, and to temporarily improve the appearance of glabellar lines (frown lines) between the eyebrows. It may also be used off-label for other focal dystonias such as blepharospasm[1][3][4][5][7][8]. The effects are reversible over several months as nerve terminals regenerate.
