Absorbable gelatin sponge is a sterile, water-insoluble, porcine-derived hemostatic agent and embolic material. It is widely utilized in surgical procedures to control capillary, venous, and small arterial bleeding when conventional methods are ineffective. In interventional oncology, it serves as a temporary embolic agent for transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) and portal vein embolization (PVE), particularly for treating hepatocellular carcinoma. The sponge provides a physical matrix that promotes platelet aggregation and accelerates the formation of a fibrin clot, leading to mechanical occlusion of blood vessels. It is typically absorbed within 4 to 6 weeks when implanted in tissues.
