ABT-436

ABT-436 is an orally active, highly selective small molecule antagonist of the vasopressin V1b receptor. It was developed by Abbott Laboratories and AbbVie for the treatment of major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, and alcohol use disorder (alcoholism). The drug acts by blocking the effects of vasopressin at the V1b receptor, which is implicated in regulating stress responses, anxiety, and addictive behaviors. Clinical trials showed that ABT-436 increased abstinent days in people with alcohol use disorder and reduced smoking among participants; it appeared to be more effective in individuals with higher baseline stress levels. Despite reaching phase II clinical trials for these indications, development was discontinued[1][2][3][4][5][7].
